North Macedonia is one of the Europe’s most underrated travel destinations. Located in the heart of the Balkans and without access to the sea, it is a country that doesn’t get talked about. Hiking through the Macedonian remote national parks encounters a shifting and weathered panorama of crashing waterfalls, vertiginous gorges, lively rivers. On the way pass rural mountain villages, where nothing have changed for hundreds of years. Take you to beautiful monasteries, churches and Macedonia’s famous lakes.

North Macedonia is just making its way to the European Union, with its neighbors it has some problems, and internal friction between North Macedonians and Albanians sometimes gets attention. Natural sights, especially mountains and lakes, which attract tourists and mountaineers, and are home to towns and monasteries with a long history. Part of it will also be viewed by us, including three mountain groups: Sar Planina, Galicica and Baba.
Upon arrival in the Macedonian capital, an informative tour of the city Skopje. The beginnings of the town go back to prehistoric times, the Romans founded the city here, rebuilt it after the earthquake of 1963, and after its independence several monumental buildings and monuments related to ancient history were added to it.
We are starting with sightseeing of the North Macedonian capital: Fort of the Kale, mosque, church of St. Spas and centers around Vardar River. Later, a short stopover will take us to Tetovo and to the winter sports center Popova Sapka (1780 m) in the Sar Planina mountain.
In the morning we will take a mountain tour to the highest peak of Sar Planina, at 2748 meters high Tito’s Peak. The tour is not technically demanding, the route ascends long, gentle slopes and requires 8 hours of walking. Return to Popova Sapka and drive through Gostivar to Mavrovo, which has both a summer and winter tourist season (1200 m).
After breakfast, get to know the surroundings of North Macedonia’s largest national park, including the border mountain Korab (2764 m), the highest peak in the country. We will continue our journey along the canyon of the Radika River and the Black Drim River/Crni Drim to Struga and Ohrid. A sunny town on the shore of Lake Ohrid/Ohridsko Ezero, which lies at an altitude of 693 meters and has 348 km2. We will visit the Old town, Clement’s University, the Church of St. Sofia, mosaic of Monastery and Samuel’s Fortress.
Along the lake we will first take a stroll to the famous monastery of St. Naum with numerous springs with water from Prespa Lake. Then to the saddle Livada (1568 m), from where we will go to Magara (2245 m), the highest peak in the Galicica National Park, a total of 4 hours walking. The peak features views of Ohrid and Prespa Lake, which will be our next destination. Later we will drive to Bitola, which boasts ancient history. That is why we will take a look at the archeological remains of the Roman city of Heracles, accommodation in a hotel in the city or under mountain Pelister.
In the early morning we will head to the Pelister National Park area of the Baba Mountain Group. From the smaller ski center, we will first hike through the forest of autochthonous pine, and then through the rocky slopes to the summit of Pelister (2601 m). From the top there is a beautiful view on the fertile Bitola Plain and many peaks around. It will take 9 hours to get to the top and down the other side of the mountain, return to Bitola.
On the last day our journey takes us through North Macedonia back to Skopje. We will make a longer stop in Prilep and Kavadarci in the Tikves wine-growing region, which boasts a selection of wines. Of course, we will visit the wine cellar and taste for yourself the quality of these wines. Along the Vardar River and past Veles we will come to Skopje and once again stroll through the lively streets. Overnight and end of the trip.
On the last day, after breakfast, the tour ends here in Skopje and we say our farewells.
The tour is booked or reserved by paying an advance of 30% of the total amount on the account. After receiving the payment, we will send you a confirmation of payment.
You will definitely need good (ankle high) hiking boots, trekking poles to support your knees, day backpack, some snacks and a light jacket.
That all depends on the weather forecast. If there is just some light rain we will still go on trekking. However, if it’s gonna be heavy rain, we will try to move trekking to another most convenient day. In either case, we constantly check weather forecast so we can arrange the best trip for you.
In the price is included: all transportation under the program, accommodation with breakfast in hotels or mountain huts, entrance fees to cultural and natural sights, health insurance with assistance abroad, the organization of the trip and the Slovenian escort on the way, counseling and assistance in preparing for the trip, VAT.
You can rent equipment, but you need to inform us at least 21 days before the start of your program. Our trips are in remote areas where there are no shops or rental services, so we need to provide them from a distance. Please note that rental on the spot is usually not available.
In the tour are not included any meals other than breakfast, tips for the local population, extra for a single room, the cost of personal equipment and expenses and risk of cancellation.
The accommodation is usually in hotels ( 2 bed-room), except during some of the trekking days, where we sleep in a mountain huts (number of beds in room depends on availability).
On the tours breakfast is included. Other meals, like snacks, lunch and dinner on our tours are not included, because of the variety of tastes of our participants.
