What to Expect

Trekking trip Bulgaria – main attractions, nature and culture

We are going to Bulgaria mainly for hiking in the mountain range of this country and to enjoy the most beautiful pearls of that nature. In Bulgaria, we will visit three mountain groups with the highest peak of the Balkan, the capital Sofia, the pearl of medieval culture, the Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and much more.

 

Trekking trip Bulgaria – true hiking

We will head to Bansko, a small town with granite peaks, from where we will do one-day hiking tours. Among other things we will also jump to Musala, which with its 2925 meters represents the highest peak of Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula. The trekking around Bulgaria is NOT technically demanding and does not require any special technical equipment.

Itinerary

Day 1Sofia

We’ll gather in Sofia in the afternoon and start with a presentation of the program in the hotel. Start of the trip with an informative tour of the city. There is also an option of organized transfer from a nearby airport.

Day 2Sofia - Vitosha Mountains - Samokov

After breakfast, drive to Vitosha National Park and Aleko Winter Sports Center in the Vitosha Mountain, which rises above the capital and ascends to the highest peak Black Peak (2290 m), it will take 3 hours to walk. After the descent, first visit to the National Museum with a rich archeological collection, a gallery of icons and an ethnographic exhibition, and later to the city center with monumental buildings, monuments and churches. Drive to Samokov, a city that used to live on blacksmithing and sacred art. After staying at the hotel, visit the sights of the city, which still has a touch of oriental life.

Day 3Samokov - Borovec - Rila Mountains And Musala (2925 M) - Bansko

From Samokov we’ll drive to the Borovec sports center in the Rila mountain group and past the three mountain huts to Musala (2925 m), the highest peak in the Balkans. Combined with the Jastrebec cable car, which leads over 2300 meters high, it will take for about 6 hours to hike past the high mountain lakes. Return to the valley, ride under the northern slopes of Pirin and stay at a hotel in the modern Bansko Winter Sports Center.

Day 4Samokov - Seven Rila Lakes / Sedemte Ezera - Bansko

We’ll start the day with the drive under the slopes of Rila to the spa Sapareva Banja and along the mountain road to the chairlift Pionerska (1520 m). Then with the cable car to the Rilski Ezera hut (2150 m), and from there continue on foot past the mountain lakes to the top of Zeleni Kamak (2591 m) with a beautiful views over Rila and Pirin, our next destination. Altitude difference: 400 m, hiking time 4 hours. Descent to the hut and by cable car into the valley. We’ll take a stop at the spa and then drive through the Struma valley to the fashionable winter sports center Bansko, accommodation.

Day 5Bansko - Melnik - Monastery Rozen - Sandanski - Bansko

Drive through the Struma valley to Melnik, the smallest Bulgarian town located near the Greek border and distinguished by its surrounding sandstone formations and typical architecture. We’ll visit the Rozen Monastery, which was is located in the middle of the mountains and other places (2 hours hike). Follows a stopover at the Sandanski spa, where the rebellious Spartak was born and a return to Bansko.

Day 6Bansko - Pirin Mountains And Vihren (2914 M) - Bansko

Breakfast is followed by a short drive past the ski slope to Banderica in the Pirin Mountains, which has been declared a national park next to Rila. Hike to the Vihren hut and later along the eastern and southern slopes to Vihren (2914 m). The summit is distinguished by extensive views across the Pirin Macedonia and to the border mountains with Greece and Macedonia. In favorable conditions, descent the another way to Banderica, a total of 6 hours walk. Return to Bansko and free.

Day 7Bansko - Rila Monastery - Sofia

Departure from Bansko, sightseeing of the famous Rila Monastery, which lies in the heart of Rila and is under UNESCO protection. The monastery was the center of Bulgarian cultural life, and the saint St. Ivan Rilski, who holds a special place in Bulgarian history.

Drive to Sofia, visit the city center with monumental buildings, monuments and churches, in the meantime we won’t miss the remains from the Roman and medieval periods. Accommodation in a hotel and last dinner in a typical restaurant.

Day 8Sofia

After breakfast, transfer to the airport and we say our farewells.

FAQ

When is your tour booked and confirmed?

The tour is booked or reserved by paying an advance of 30% of the total amount on the account. After receiving the payment, we will send you a confirmation of payment.

What equipment do I need for trekking?

You will definitely need good (ankle high) hiking boots, trekking poles to support your knees, day backpack, some snacks and a light jacket.

Is the tour still on in case of rain?

That all depends on the weather forecast. If there is just some light rain we will still go on trekking. However, if it’s gonna be heavy rain, we will try to move trekking to another most convenient day. In either case, we constantly check weather forecast so we can arrange the best trip for you.

What is included?

In the price is included: all transportation under the program, accommodation with breakfast in hotels or mountain huts, entrance fees to cultural and natural sights, health insurance with assistance abroad, the organization of the trip and the Slovenian escort on the way, counseling and assistance in preparing for the trip, VAT.

Can I rent equipment?

You can rent equipment, but you need to inform us at least 21 days before the start of your program. Our trips are in remote areas where there are no shops or rental services, so we need to provide them from a distance. Please note that rental on the spot is usually not available.

What is NOT included?

In the tour are not included any meals other than breakfast, tips for the local population, extra for a single room, the cost of personal equipment and expenses and risk of cancellation.

Accommodation

The accommodation is usually in hotels ( 2 bed-room), except during some of the trekking days, where we sleep in a mountain huts (number of beds in room depends on availability).

Is food included with the tour?

On the tours breakfast is included. Other meals, like snacks, lunch and dinner on our tours are not included, because of the variety of tastes of our participants.
